I. Mrs. Chippy - Alteration of MotionIII. Félicette - Body in Motion, Body at RestViolin - Jennifer ChoiViolin - Mary RowellViola - Jessica MeyerCello - Ashley BathgateEach of the three movements of String Quartet No. 1 takes its name and inspiration from a mostly unsung voyager from the annals of history. Mrs. Chippy was an explorer aboard the Endurance, the ill-fated ship of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914. Oskar/”Unsinkable” Sam was a sailor who served with both the German Kriegsmarine and the British Royal Navy during World War II, surviving the sinking of the Bismarck, the HMS Cossack and the HMS Ark Royal. Félicette was an astronaut who made a 15-minute suborbital flight in 1963 on a capsule launched by the French rocket Véronique. Each of these intrepid explorers faced untold dangers and tribulations on their respective journeys. None of them returned unaffected, if they returned at all.All three were also cats. This quartet is dedicated to the memory of Winston Bell, our own voyager, who departed on his interdimensional journey in January of this year.
